• World Youth Hockey Championship for 10 years. World Cup: About the tournament

    22.12.2023

    World Junior Club Hockey Cup is an annual tournament that brings together famous youth hockey clubs that are winners and prize-winners of championships and tournaments in their countries.

    The World Cup among youth club teams has a fairly rich history and the official status of the International Hockey Federation - “a tournament sanctioned by the IIHF”.

    For 8 years, teams from the following countries took part in the Cup: Austria, Belarus, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, USA, Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Sweden.

    The ninth World Cup will again be held in Sochi, all matches of the tournament will be hosted by the Shayba Ice Arena.

    Format

    The teams participating in the tournament are divided into two subgroups and play matches among themselves within the groups in a round-robin system. The first two teams from each group determine the winner and prize-winners of the tournament. Teams that lost in the semi-finals play for third place. The winners of the semi-finals determine the winner of the tournament in the final match.

    Trophy

    After each World Cup final match, the winner takes the trophy home. The design of the cup was changed after the first tournament, which took place in 2011 and was crowned with the victory of the Red Army. The second cup, which was presented in 2012, remains unchanged to this day.

    The silver cup of the first ever World Cup was made in Italy. On July 28, 2011, the cup was presented to the fans for the first time, after which it went to Omsk. On September 3, after the final siren, the captain of the Red Army, Roman Lyubimov, raised the new trophy above his head. The cup became the permanent possession of the club and is now in the CSKA museum.

    On August 11, 2012, a presentation of the new trophy took place, the design of which remains unchanged to this day. The material from which the trophy was made and its shape have changed. The second cup is bronze, with a multi-layer galvanic nickel coating. The base is decorated with a pedestal made of valuable wood. The cup's two shaped handles are shaped like clubs and follow the shape of the bowl that sits on top of the trophy.

    Logo

    Since 2016, the World Cup logo remains recognizable in the usual arrangement of elements, but is somewhat modified depending on the location of the tournament. In 2016, the World Cup was hosted by two cities of the Republic of Tatarstan - Naberezhnye Chelny and Nizhnekamsk. The colors of the flag and coat of arms of the Republic of Tatarstan were used in the emblem. The background for the image of the hockey player was a folk Tatar ornament, which is adjacent to the image of the globe.

    The 2017 logo uses the colors of the flag and coat of arms of the Sverdlovsk region: green, white and blue. The green part of the logo is stylized to resemble malachite, a mineral for which deposits of the Urals were known in the past. A decorative image of malachite became the background for the logo, along with the blue half, identical in color to the stripe from the regional flag.

    The 2018 World Cup logo has acquired the colors of the Sirius Educational Center, whose name is now mentioned in the official name of the tournament.

    The 43rd IIHF World Youth Championship will be held in Canada from December 26, 2018 to January 5, 2019. Tournament matches will be held in Vancouver and Victoria. The ten best teams in the world will compete for victory in the world championship.

    Venue and schedule of MFM-19

    The final decision on the location of the Youth World Championship was made on December 1, 2016. In addition to Vancouver and Victoria, several Canadian cities competed for the right to host the tournament: Windsor, London, Winnipeg, Sasktown, Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa. The world youth championship games will take place in two arenas - Rogers Arena in Vancouver and Save-on-Foods Memorial Center in Victoria. The main arena of the championship seats 18,910 spectators and will host Group A matches, two quarter-final matches, semi-finals, as well as a match for third place and the final. Group B matches will be played at the arena in Victoria, as well as two quarter-final matches.

    The group stage matches will take place from December 26 to December 31, the quarter-finals will take place on January 2, the semi-finals will take place on January 4, and the third place match and final will take place on January 5.

    Regulations and format of the MFM-2019

    Compared to last year's tournament, there were no major changes in the regulations. The top ten teams in the world are divided into two groups of five teams. At the group stage of the competition, all teams play one match within the group. Based on the results of the round-robin tournament, a standings are formed, according to which the top four teams from each group advance to the playoffs, and the teams in fifth place play a repechage round, at the end of which the losing team is relegated to the division below. If two teams score the same number of points, the team that wins the head-to-head match takes the higher place. If more than two national teams scored the same number of points, the difference between abandoned and missed indicators is compared.

    The quarterfinal pairs of the World Youth Championship are formed as follows:

    • 1st place of group “A” – 4th place of group “B”;
    • 2nd place of group “A” – 3rd place of group “B”;
    • 3rd place in group “A” – 2nd place in group “B”;
    • 4th place in group “A” – 1st place in group “B”.

    The winning teams in the quarterfinals advance to the next round of the tournament, while the losing teams go home. The winners of the semi-final matches play the final match for the gold medals, while the losers play for the bronze medals.

    In case of a draw in the group stage of the competition, an additional period of five minutes is assigned or until the first goal is scored. If the five-minute period does not reveal a winner, a series of post-match shootouts is scheduled. In the quarterfinals and semi-finals, if the result is a draw, the overtime duration increases to ten minutes, and the teams play in a 4 vs 4 format. Only in the final match, if the result is a draw, overtime is assigned, the length of which is 20 minutes, and the teams play in a 5 vs 5 format.

    Participants of the MFM-2019

    10 teams will take part in the 2019 World Youth Championship: Canada, Russia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Switzerland, USA, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia and Kazakhstan. The first participant in the 2019 World Cup as the host country was the Canadian team. Another 8 national teams won the right to compete in the world championship following the results of last year’s tournament. The Kazakhstan national team became the winner of last year's World Youth Championship in the second division, so in the elite division it replaced the Belarusian national team, which was eliminated a year earlier.

    Winners of the World Youth Hockey Championships

    In the entire history of the youth world championships, 42 championship trophies have been awarded. The most titled team is the Canadian national team, which has 17 gold medals. The Russian team has four fewer championship titles. All other teams are seriously inferior. The full list of world youth champions is presented below:

    • Canada – 17;
    • Russia + CIS + USSR – 13;
    • Finland and the USA – 4;
    • Sweden and the Czech Republic – 2.

    Favorites and outsiders of MFM 2019 groups in Canada

    Group "A": Canada, Russia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Switzerland.

    The main favorite in Group A is the Canadian team. Under any circumstances, the Maple Leaf team is the main contender for victory in the group, especially when it comes to the home tournament. The Russians, Czechs and Swiss will fight for second place in the standings. The undisputed outsider of the group is the Danish team.

    Group "B": USA, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Kazakhstan.

    In group “B” the fight for first place will be more serious. Three teams will fight for victory in the group: Americans, Swedes and Finns. Probably, the Slovaks will be able to take the penultimate place following the results of the round-robin tournament. The main outsider of the group is the national team of Kazakhstan, which made it to the elite division for the first time in nine years.

    Who will win the World Junior Hockey Championship?

    The main favorite of the entire tournament is the current trophy holder - Team Canada, which is also the host country of the World Youth Championship. The main competitors of the Canadians are their North American neighbors - the US team. Among the European teams, the teams from Sweden and Russia, which traditionally participate in the distribution of places on the podium, primarily attract attention.

The tournament will be held in Canada, in the sports arenas of Vancouver and Victoria, where the teams of Canada, Russia, the USA, Sweden, and Finland will compete against each other. For which team will the upcoming edition of the World Cup be happy?! Sports observers are betting on the host country's hockey team. But fans of other participating teams have a different opinion...

    Where and when will the 2019 World Youth Hockey Championship take place?

    The 43rd edition of the hockey championship will take place from December 26, 2018 to January 5, 2019. The ice fights will be hosted by the Canadian cities of Vancouver and Victoria.

    Hockey players will have two sports complexes at their disposal: Rogers Arena and Save-on-Foods Memorial Center. The first insurance company is located in the Canadian capital, and the second is in the city of Victoria.

    Rogers Arena

    The main sports ground of the competition, which seats almost 19,000 spectators. It is on its territory that the final of the 2019 World Cup among youth teams will take place. In addition to the climactic match, the Vancouver arena will host Group A matches.

    Save-on-Foods Memorial Center

    A multifunctional building on the territory of which exhibitions, concerts and large-scale sporting events are equally successful.

    The capacity of the Save-on-Foods Memorial Center is modest - just over 7,000 seats.

    Schedule of games for the 2019 World Youth Hockey Championship

    The competition will last 11 days. This is what the preliminary calendar of future fights looks like:

    • December 26 – 31, 2018: group stage matches;
    • January 2 and 4, 2019: repechage round (2 head-to-head matches in which the two worst teams of groups A and B will challenge the right to remain in the top division);
    • January 2: quarter-finals;
    • January 4: semi-final;
    • January 5: final and bronze medal match.

    Teams 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship

    The tournament trophy will be competed by 10 teams. At the first stage they will be divided into two quintets:

    Group A:

    1. Canada;
    2. Russia;
    3. Czech Republic;
    4. Denmark;
    5. Switzerland.

    Group B:

    1. Sweden;
    2. Finland;
    3. Slovakia;
    4. Kazakhstan.

    Based on the results of the meetings, the four best participating teams from each quintet will advance to the playoff round. The two worst teams will compete for the right to remain in the major league. The loser of the confrontation will go to seek his fortune in division B.

    Russian national team at the 2019 Youth Hockey World Cup

    The attention of domestic fans, of course, is focused on the Russian team - a constant contender for the gold medals of the championship.

    Our guys ended up in the same company with the “maple leaves”. Therefore, already at the group stage, spectators of the hockey world championship will be treated to an epic confrontation between the two strongest teams in the world!

    All other opponents are quite tough for Valery Bragin’s team. In fact, domestic hockey players in the quintet have only two serious opponents - Canadians and Czechs. Switzerland and Denmark are unlikely to confuse the Russians' plans.

    Results of the 2019 Hockey World Championship among youth teams

    The current champion is Team Canada. At the last World Cup, the North Americans defeated the Swedes in the final match. This is a record 17th gold for the Maple Leaves!

    Canadians will fight on their own soil. And at home, as you know, even the walls help. Therefore, the Canadian squad is the No. 1 contender for the championship title!

    Other hockey teams may also try for the trophy. First of all, these are the neighbors of the “maple leaves” - the Americans, as well as the Swedes and Finns. The chances of the remaining participating teams to take first place in the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship standings are minimal.

    Another potential winner is the Russian team. In recent history, domestic hockey players have been able to listen to their native anthem in the World Cup finals 4 times. The last time our guys won the title was in 2011. Since then, the Russians played in the climactic match three more times, but were always content with silver.

    Valery Bragin’s team cannot count the last edition of the competition. Domestic hockey players performed poorly in the group, and already had ¼ of their chances for medals. The fans were upset... So the Russians will have to work hard to regain the trust of their fans!

    The 2018 World Youth Hockey Championship starts in late December 2017. As part of the 42-draw of the tournament, players will again, as last season, cross their sticks on the ice arenas of North America. If a year ago Canada was the host country of the competition, then the upcoming championship will be hosted by the United States. This means that the current champions of the tournament, the US team, will have incredible motivation! Therefore, the Russian team will have to work hard to win gold at the hockey championship. Let's hope that Valery Bragin's team will live up to the brightest hopes of the fans!

    Where and when will the 2018 Youth Hockey World Championship take place?

    Four US cities competed for the right to host ice squads: Buffalo, St. Louis, Tampa and Pittsburgh. As a result, the organizers of the competition chose the first contender. So the upcoming competition will take place in the city of Buffalo. Meetings of hockey teams will take place from December 26, 2016 to January 5, 2017. Interestingly, the 42nd season will be organized at exactly the same time as the 41st.

    Teams of the world youth hockey championship will be provided with 3 sports facilities: New Era Field, Keybank Center and Harbor Center. The most spacious of them is New Era Field. This is a real mega-arena with a capacity of 71,870 spectators. True, the sports complex will only host one meeting. But it will be very unusual, because it will be held in the open air! It is expected that the participants in this unique match will be Canadians and Americans. The main venue for hockey meetings will be the Keybank Center and the Harbor Center. The first arena seats about 19,000 people, and the second - just under 2 thousand.

    Participants of the World Youth Hockey Championship

    In total, 10 teams will come to American Buffalo:

    1. Canada;
    2. Denmark;
    3. Slovakia;
    4. Finland;
    5. Russia;
    6. Sweden;
    7. Czech Republic;
    8. Switzerland;
    9. Belarus.

    Practically, these are all the same teams that took part in the previous edition. The newcomer to the tournament is Belarus. The Slavic brothers replaced the Latvians, who were eliminated at the end of the 2017 World Cup.

    Schedule of games for the 2018 World Youth Hockey Championship

    The competition can be divided into 4 stages: group stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

    10 teams participating in the tournament, divided into two quintets, will fight among themselves for the right to reach the quarter finals.

    The eight best teams will compete for 4 spots in the ½ playoffs.

    Based on the results of this stage of the 2018 Youth Hockey World Championship, two of the four teams will make it to the finals of the competition.

    The culmination of the tournament. Two lucky winners will compete for the crown of the 42nd draw. The match for third place will take place on the same day.

    In addition, the competition format includes a consolation round. During it, two teams that showed the worst results in the group stage will meet. The consolation round, consisting of a two-match series, will take place on January 2 and 3.

    The schedule is very arbitrary. The final dates will be announced a little later.

    Russian team at the World Championships

    The domestic team is the traditional favorite of the competition. However, our last victory in the tournament dates back only to 2011. Since then, the Russians have regularly taken silver and bronze in the championship, but the main trophy has slipped through their hands each time. Let’s hope that the current composition of the Russian youth team at the world hockey championship in 2018 will be able to put an end to this sad series. And the hunt for the trophy will begin from the group stage. Our opponents in Quintet A will be the following teams:

    • Sweden;
    • Czech Republic;
    • Switzerland;
    • Belarus.

    The group composition is very strong. And it is the performances of the Russians in the quintet that determine the fate of the team in the playoffs. It is advisable for our guys to take the highest possible place, because in Group B the Canadians play with the Americans. Therefore, I wouldn’t want to run into the North Americans in the quarter finals.

    Afterword

    Only providence knows what the final table of the Youth World Hockey Championship will look like in 2018. The Americans are quite capable of doing a double – after all, this is their home championship. Canadians, Czechs, Swedes and a number of other teams are capable of resisting the ambitious plans of the US team. Among them is the Russian national team!
