Another way to save is to make purchases out of season: then you can buy shoes even with a 50% discount.

Fans of an active lifestyle know very well how important it is to choose comfortable shoes. You need to be especially careful when choosing for running. In general, all fans of this sport can be divided into two categories: some need speed, others prefer convenience. Best for off-road

Separate mention should be made about sneakers designed for use in less than standard conditions. To begin with, it is not very clear what kind of off-road is meant. The main difference between these models is that they will not be used on a flat surface, but on a wide variety of soils and in a wide variety of climatic conditions. Let's look at the most popular models in this category.

    Moisture-resistant and water-repellent

The best off-road running shoes are made from materials that won't get wet or deteriorate when exposed to moisture. True, these are not the most comfortable shoes for long runs, since in terms of comfort and weight they are still inferior to conventional running models. Among the waterproof sneakers that have proven themselves to be the best, there are two types: ASICS Gel-Trabuco 9 and ASICS Gel-Trabuco 10.

Both models are distinguished by a high level of comfort and protection, providing full contact with any surface. Special Rock Protection Plate technology protects the sole and feet, respectively, from branches and stones. Among the water-repellent sneakers, the ASICS Gel-Trabuco 11 model can again be distinguished. They feature a wear-resistant upper. Another SUV of the same type is the Brooks Adrenaline ASR 5.

    Waterproof

The best sneakers for melting snowdrifts and autumn puddles are waterproof ones. They are created on the basis of modern membrane materials Gore-Tex and Event. Their features include excellent insulating properties, removing heat and moisture from the boot, while retaining it outside. Such models are complemented by a textured tread, so using such sneakers for running is not very convenient. In this class of shoes, there are many good reviews about the Salomon XT Wings WP sneakers. As a rule, such models are in demand among those who prefer active and sometimes extreme recreation. Users advise choosing more expensive models, because they will definitely be of better quality.

    For the mountains and beyond

Off-road sneakers differ in their tread pattern, and this significantly expands the scope of their application. For example, to conquer mountain trails, you need to choose sneakers whose tread is abrasion-resistant and has moderate terrain. On the plains, the tread pattern should be completely different: with deep relief and soft rubber. But most manufacturers create universal versions of shoes that can be worn both for conquering mountains and for walking on the plain.

    Rating of the best off-road

We decided to describe the three most popular models, which are ideal for use in less than comfortable road and climatic conditions:

    1. The Mizuno Wave Kazan 2 is an excellent off-road option. The model, according to athletes, deserves attention due to the improved durable mesh and greater support of the upper, while the dynamism of the shoe remains at a high level. For rough terrain, as buyers say, there is no better model.
    2. Asics Sonoma are budget sneakers that are suitable for lovers of morning runs through the forest. The model is designed in such a way that the foot is placed neutrally. There is a gel insert in the heel, the purpose of which is to dissipate the shock load during long runs on unpaved roots or trails.
    3. Salomon S-Lab Fellcross 3 - the model, as buyers say, is designed for use in mountainous terrain. The tread sole provides better grip on the ground, and comfort is achieved with a minimal shock-absorbing layer. • The sole of a sports shoe should bend well if you step back 1/3 from the toe.

    Video

Choosing running shoes for long-term training or for your, perhaps, first marathon is not an easy task. We talked to runners with hundreds of miles under their belts to find out which models they consider the coolest. A selection in our material.

    Puma Speed 300 Ignite 2

Last year, the Puma brand decided to expand its line of sneakers for runners and released a model with the self-explanatory name Speed. These are one of the lightest sneakers of the brand, the main feature of the model is the midsole made of foam material, which will allow you to train on asphalt. The upper is made of lightweight mesh fabric.

    Sergey Cherepanov

marathon runner and director of the Marathon Running Academy

One of the main advantages of the model is its lightness, only 220 g. Narrow last, neutral pronation (the way the outer part of the foot is positioned when walking and running), lack of additional support for the foot - all this suits me. Moreover, for such a minimalist model there is good shock absorption. The shoe is suitable for track training and competitions from 5 to 21 km for runners weighing no more than 70 kg. Well, what is also very important, beautiful appearance, reasonable price, sneakers can withstand more than 400 km of run - for a competition model this is a very good indicator.

The Puma Speed 300 has become my go-to training shoe. They're light enough for intervals and soft enough for long runs. The downside is that they get wet instantly if you get caught in the rain.

    Hoka One One Bondi 5

Seven years ago, two French runners, Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, founded the Hoka company, whose sneakers featured thick soles. Twice as thick as other brands! But at the same time, the sneakers themselves are not heavy at all. The Bondi 5 is designed for running on asphalt and you'll appreciate the grip on hard surfaces. The toe part is quite wide - the fingers are guaranteed a free position.

    Kirill Tsvetkov

    ultra-marathoner, sports blogger

The Hoka One One Bondi 5 is a thick sole model for long and ultra-long distance running. The sneakers are designed for running on asphalt and do not have an aggressive tread, although they are also suitable for running on dense dirt paths. Hoka One One Bondi 5 has excellent cushioning, a wide last in the forefoot, the height difference between the heel and the foot in this model is 4 mm, which also allows you to place your foot on the surface from the middle or forefoot without any problems. You won’t be able to break speed records in these sneakers, but maintaining an average pace of 4.30 min/km is quite possible.

    Hoka One One Clifton 3

Another model from the Hoka One One brand for running on asphalt. These sneakers are loved for their thick, soft soles; you can easily run marathons in them. The seamless upper of the sneaker is practically devoid of hard elements and does not restrict the movement of the foot when running. The curved geometry of the outsole will give you a shoe with excellent responsiveness.

    Anna Kosova

    running blogger, experienced amateur runner

I've been running in Clifton 3 for a long time and a lot. You can run in them not only on asphalt, but also on dirt paths and forest paths. A fairly thick and soft heel allows you to preserve your joints and knees. Some people say that you can easily twist your ankle in the Hoka, but this is not true because the foot in these sneakers fits like a boat thanks to the special design. When I ran in them for the first time, I had the feeling of running barefoot, again due to the design of the sneaker. The foot does not stop working, despite such powerful support, it is still always loaded. And this is very cool.

    Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34

Two words characterize this model - lightness and speed. A kind of “workhorse” for all runners. Foam cushioning features Zoom Air units in both the heel and forefoot. An interesting detail is the reflective heel of the sneaker; now you can run in the dark without fear of being unnoticed. By the way, you can order sneakers on the official website by creating your own design.

    Olga Smirnova

Pegasus is a classic in running, I have loved this model since 2011. And this year, the updated pegasuses have become softer and more elastic, while maintaining their speed properties. This model is ideal for both track and long distances on asphalt.

    Nike Zoom Fly

Special foam materials make running in the Nike Zoom Fly super soft. The upper, by the way, is almost seamless, made of mesh material, which provides excellent ventilation - you will definitely appreciate this during long runs. The push with each step helps create a special arch support along the entire length of the sole. This model is all about speed.

    Olga Smirnova

Nike ambassador, two-time Russian champion in athletics

Zoom Fly is a new model, there have been no analogues yet. The innovative sole prevents your feet from getting tired throughout the entire distance. But these shoes are more suitable for runners with more experience. Amateurs who run with a heel strike are unlikely to appreciate them, since in this model the roll is in the forefoot, so that the landing is precisely on this part.

    Asics GEL-Noosa Tri 11

This model got its name in honor of the sports festival in the Australian town of Noosa, and it was developed for professional triathletes. The sneakers are designed for athletes weighing 65-80 kg, with neutral pronation. And although the model has changed a little over time, it is still distinguished by its bright design. The inner space forms an almost seamless structure - you can train in these sneakers without socks.

    Anna Khryashcheva

Asics Ambassador, Candidate of Masters in Athletics, Master of Sports in Mountain Running

I am scrupulous when choosing running shoes. For daily training - one, for speed - another, and for starts - another. I always spend an hour or even more in stores. I run and compare. My current competition shoe is the Noosa 11. It's a triathlon shoe. Suitable for both training and competitions at distances of 20 km and above. These sneakers fit the foot, they are comfortable, no stray toes or calluses. But it is worth considering that these shoes are very specific and are more suitable for trained athletes who have well-developed feet and calf muscles.

    Asics fuzeX Rush CM

Manufacturers claim that these sneakers are suitable for a wide audience - from beginners to professional runners. On the sole you will see the inscription fuzeGEL - this is an upgraded cushioning, the layer is distributed over the entire area of the sole, removing a significant part of the impact load from the joints of the foot.

    Anna Khryashcheva

Asics Ambassador, Candidate in Athletics, Master of Sports in Mountain Running

I was pleasantly surprised by the fuzeX series. To be honest, we were attracted by the design, which was not similar to the classic Asics. The sneakers are light and fit perfectly on the foot. For runners with neutral pronation, they can be a favorite pair as they are very versatile. You can jog for six minutes - they will be pleasantly soft, or you can “roll” out of four - they will push. The best option for long training sessions with accelerations.

The main thing when choosing sneakers is to rely on your feelings and not compromise. At the preparation stage, even a slight discomfort can turn into a nuisance (a callus, a broken nail) and ruin the start. Therefore, all experiments are done in the off-season!

    Adidas Adizero Takumi Ren 3

Adizero Takumi Ren 3 was created together with Japanese shoe masters Omori and Mimura. Due to the excellent shock absorption, you can run in these sneakers both in training and in competitions; the rubber provides traction with the surface in any conditions - in these shoes you can train in the rain without any problems.

    Lena Kalashnikova

runner, author of the blog far2run.ru

The Adidas Adizero Takumi Ren 3 is my competition shoe. Such shoes are needed for trained fast runners; beginners do not need them. What's the point? Competition shoes are much lighter than training shoes. Takumi weigh almost nothing, 170-180 g on the foot is not felt at all. You can run in them easily and quickly, the sole is made so that it is comfortable to land on the forefoot. Minus - they don't last long. Mine failed after 200 km - that's the price for lightness. So if you wear them, then only for records.

    Adidas Adizero Adios

The Adizero Adios sneakers are minimalist and very light. Only a light mesh material wraps around your foot, which, however, tightly secures the foot - safety is ensured. The flexible sole follows the natural movement of the foot, and the rubber outsole allows you to run even in the rain - excellent grip on wet surfaces. But you will enjoy running in these sneakers even in hot weather; the mesh material ensures complete ventilation of your feet.

    Iskander Yadgarov

    Adidas ambassador, half marathon runner

For competitions and high-speed training on the road, for the second year now I have been using the Adizero Adios model marathon shoes - the most popular of the Adidas competition line. Four world records have been set in these shoes! When running fast, the weight of the sneakers plays a very important role - lightweight versions have an advantage. The Adizero Adios sneakers have a streamlined, ergonomic silhouette made from lightweight mesh material. But do not forget that an equally important quality of good sneakers is shock absorption and elasticity, otherwise the risk of injury increases. All of the latest Adios feature a BOOST midsole that delivers extra comfort and cushioning that returns energy with every step.

Moreover, they are very stylish, it is not a shame to wear such shoes at the main race of this year - the Moscow Marathon. By the way, on the eve of this event, Adidas presents an exclusive model of Adizero Adios sneakers, released in a limited edition. Only 250 pairs will go on sale on September 10th. I will go to the upcoming competition wearing them.

    Nike Air Zoom Vomero 10

Manufacturers say about the Nike Air Zoom Vomero ten model: comfort and softness. Panels in the forefoot and heel provide responsive cushioning as you run, while a padded collar provides ankle support. Thanks to its soft cushioning, this model can also be suitable for runners during recovery.

    Lena Kalashnikova

runner, author of the blog far2run.ru

This model is 2015. The 11th and 12th models have already been released, but I haven’t tried them and I don’t know whether they remain as cool or have deteriorated. But the Vomero 10 turned out to be the most durable of all my sneakers. I ran more than 1,000 kilometers in them, which is a lot for one pair. What are they good for? Very soft, good for long and slow cross-country runs. There is cushioning both in the forefoot and in the heel - that is, Vomero is suitable for both those who land on the forefoot when running and those who land on the heel. It’s not very comfortable to speed in them - they’re too heavy. But for volumes I definitely didn’t have anything better.

    Saucony Fastwitch 8

Good day everyone, today we will put on our shoes for a run!

Let's start with the fact that not any sports shoes are suitable for this. Sneakers, for example, are not suitable, just as sneakers for basketball, tennis, walking, etc. are not suitable. Each sport involves a specific load, and for an unprepared athlete, the most important thing is to compensate for it correctly so as not to get injured.

There are shoes designed specifically for running - running sneakers and spikes; they reduce the risk of injury and help you achieve good results. We won’t talk about spikes in this article; they have their own purpose and are not suitable for beginner runners; let’s look at sneakers.

There are several common features for running shoes:

    1) Running shoes (with the exception of some special models) must have cushioning. It should be in the heel of the sole, and the same happens in the toe. All manufacturers of high-quality running shoes indicate the presence and position of shock-absorbing inserts.

    2) The sole and upper of the sneaker must be flexible and soft in the front part.

    3) The sole has abrasion-resistant rubber inserts. Most often they are located in the heel and on the outside of the toe of the sneaker, where the main load falls.

    4) Running shoes are never made of leather or other poorly breathable materials.

    5) Rigid elements of the upper of the sneaker are allowed only in the heel area. But they should not be in contact with the leg, rubbing or putting pressure on the Achilles tendon.

    6) Lacing should ideally be located asymmetrically on the sneaker, closer to the inside of the foot.

    7) It is better if the lacing loops are not united by a single rigid bar. They should be able to move slightly so that the sneakers can fit more tightly on the foot. However, this does not have to be the case.

    8) The insole must be removable so that it can be replaced with an orthopedic one if necessary.

    9) The weight of a pair of sneakers should not exceed 400 grams.

But that is not all. Just because a shoe is good for running doesn't mean it's good for you. There are several factors to consider.

    Gender of the athlete

Men's and women's sneakers differ not only in color. A woman's foot is more demanding of shoes, so additional technologies and other materials can be used. The main differences between women's sneakers:

    1) The proportions of a woman’s leg on average differ from the proportions of a man’s, which means the last is different. Women's last is narrower

    2) The heel of women's running shoes has extra height, reducing the likelihood of Achilles tendon damage

    3) Women weigh less than men and therefore the cushioning of women's sneakers is softer than men's

An exception to these rules is, as a rule, competitive shoes, which do not have any serious design solutions and technologies, but are not suitable for long-term training.

    Pronation, supination and arch height

If you are not familiar with these concepts, you can read about them in the article pronation and supination. Here, I want to note that when choosing sneakers, the degree of pronation and the height of the arch of your foot are one of the decisive factors - this parameter directly affects the likelihood of injury. People with overpronation and low arches should choose sneakers with arch support (protection against overpronation), this will increase shock absorption and save your knees. While it is completely contraindicated for hypopronators to wear them - the likelihood of twisting a leg increases.

Wide and narrow feet, shoe size

The width of the pad mainly depends on the manufacturer. For example, Asics traditionally has a rather narrow last, Saikoni and Brooks have a wide last, and Mizuno has a narrow last at the heel and wide at the toe. When trying on sneakers, pay attention to how they fit on your foot - the sneakers should fit snugly to your foot, but at the same time not put pressure anywhere. Always lace your sneakers starting at the bottom loops to get the best fit on your foot.

The shoe size should be chosen so that the big toe does not reach the toe of the sneaker by at least 3 millimeters. This is due to the fact that when running, the foot increases in size and if you took sneakers that are exactly the right size, your nail may be damaged when running. For the same reason, it is better to try on sneakers in the evening, when the foot is enlarged from the daily load. For fitting, you should wear your running socks and have orthotics with you if you use them.

Some types of sneakers are made to run small. Most often these are competition shoes.

Type of training and weight of the athlete

The pattern here is simple: the greater your weight, the longer the distance and the worse the training of your muscles and ligaments, the more desirable is the cushioning and support. Which one (in which parts of the sneaker) depends on the structure of your foot, biomechanics and running technique.

The difference in sole height from heel to toe and running technique

The drop value is selected depending on the technique of placing the foot when running. There are generally three types of running: heel strike and midfoot or forefoot strike. When running on the heel, it is made higher and there is usually decent cushioning in the heel to minimize the risk of knee injury. When running on the midfoot or forefoot, the sole is made flatter and the shock absorption is located primarily in the front.

Just as stated above, a higher heel reduces the risk of Achilles tendon injury.

There is an opinion that the difference can affect and change your running technique. We are skeptical about this claim. The difference may help or hinder you a little from running with your technique, but the interference will never be so strong that the technique will change.

Summer and competition running shoes are made to be lightweight, breathable and easy to get wet. Winter and autumn-spring sneakers are made from denser materials that do not get wet well and retain heat better.

Contrary to the hopes of many people, there are no sneakers that are both well ventilated and waterproof. Even Gore-Tex fabric, designed to solve this problem, does not always cope with it successfully.

    Coating

The sole of the sneaker primarily depends on the surface on which we run. For running on treadmills, asphalt and other hard, flat surfaces, a flat, soft sole is suitable. For dirt tracks and similar softer soils, the sole is stiffer and the tread is deeper to improve performance. Running through the forest and in bad weather requires even more tread, and sometimes iron spikes, to prevent slipping on fallen tree trunks, ice, etc. Also, these soles are made even more rigid to protect the athlete’s foot from all kinds of sharp stones and snags.

In addition to the sole, off-road shoes often include lateral support to protect the foot from dislocations and a denser mesh that is more difficult to damage.

The difference between brands is not only observed in the pads. Each brand also has its own technologies and, although they are all similar in meaning to each other, they still have differences. So Asics uses gel, saikoni and brux, foam for shock absorption, and mizuno uses a plastic plate. They all perform the same function, but behave slightly differently, so it is better to try several options and choose the most comfortable one.

Also, some brands have their own focus. For example, Salomon focuses mainly on off-road driving.

Most of the characteristics considered can and should be determined independently, however, the degree of pronation and flat feet, as well as the nuances of the technique, are best clarified using special equipment. This can be done by going
