Moscow City Shooting and Sports Club DOSAAF of Russia

    Photo: mgssk.ru

This club is considered one of the best in Moscow: it has a rich collection of weapons - from copies of the First World War to modern examples of the shooting industry (more than 300 units in total), and on its territory there is the only 100-meter shooting gallery in the capital.

God created people, and Colonel Colt made them equal.

But if a person does not know how to use the products of a talented weapons designer properly, then the gun in his hands is no worse than a child's scarecrow. It is not enough to have a weapon, you also need. It only seems from the outside that it’s easy to shoot - once you pick up a gun and stand on the firing line, it suddenly turns out that the recoil is strong, and your hands are shaking, and the gun weighs a lot, and the protective headphones are uncomfortable, in a word, anything interferes with you make perfect shots. So practice, practice and more practice. And to make the process of mastering the skill a little easier, beginner shooters We advise you to remember the following simple rules.

    1. Accuracy is more important than speed

The best way to earn "stormtrooper syndrome" is to focus on . " I'll fire more bullets, maybe at least one target will hit» - thinks beginner shooter. This makes sense if in your hands, let's say, it makes up to 600 rounds per minute, and each of them is armor-piercing. But in the hands, alas, an ordinary pistol with extremely limited ammunition. So when training, it is better to focus on accuracy first, and speed will come by itself, along with automatism.

    2. Learn Theory

While shooting, you should not be distracted by anything, so you should know from the very beginning how to shoot correctly - and so on. And yes, even if this knowledge is purely theoretical, it is much easier to turn it into practice than the complete absence of any experience.

    3. Move naturally

The human body has its own habitual rhythms - breathing, heartbeat, involuntary muscle tremors. Trying to control them does not turn out to be good, on the contrary, it only distracts beginner shooter from the immediate task. Therefore, it is better to initially learn to shoot according to your rhythms. And that means waiting for the right moment. In any case, the weapon will tremble slightly in the hands, and the barrel will sway. So instead of forcibly combining the rear sight and the front sight, it is better to wait until they themselves are level and only then do not hesitate to shoot. Yes, it may take seconds, but you are not chasing speed just yet.

    4. Zeroing required

Any weapon takes some getting used to. The recoil force, the effort required to pull the trigger, the allowable deviations between the front sight and the whole - all this is known exclusively experimentally. So beginner shooter must be prepared for the fact that more than a dozen shots will go into milk before the features of each specific weapon become clear. With experience, this number will decrease to two or three.

    5. Focus on every shot

Your main task at the moment is to make the shooting process natural and automatic. You will think about tactics, strategy, combat missions and everyday problems when the bullets start to hit the target as if by themselves. It is for this beginner shooters and need training.

    6. If nothing works, just shoot.

Sometimes it's hard to concentrate. And to catch the moment of shooting - too. Hands begin to tremble more strongly, all sorts of thoughts come into my head, it becomes more and more difficult to concentrate. This is a very typical picture, characteristic even for professional shooters. You yourself have seen it many times, for example, at biathlon competitions - the longer a participant aims, the higher his chance to miss. So many people prefer to shoot the clip faster, and if something doesn’t hit, catch up on the run. This is a very correct tactic, because even if the shot is not placed perfectly, the muscles of the hand will still get used to the recoil, to pulling the trigger, to other movements, which will come in handy in the future.

To be honest, I myself shoot a gun frankly sucks. Lack of practice and experience. Now archery is a completely different matter. And what is characteristic, all these tips really helped me at the time. Getting used to the characteristics of weapons, building up muscle memory, tune in to the natural movement of the body - all this really helps to hit the target. And, of course, training, training and more training.

If you have not yet had a chance to hold a gun in your hands and shoot from it, then in this article you will learn about the correct grip and aiming technique. Theoretically, aiming a pistol is fairly easy, but you still need some practice to develop the skill of safely handling a weapon, holding it confidently and aiming at a target. So go to the shooting range, and first read and remember what you need to do to hit the target.

    Basic pistol shooting technique

    What will you need?

    • Target

    Grip (hold) pistol

Hold the pistol in your dominant hand. Your dominant hand should wrap around the handle of the pistol so that thumb lay on the inside of the trunk.

    • Your middle finger, ring finger, and little finger should wrap around the outside and front of the handle.
    • The index finger should be on the outside of the trigger guard.
    • This way of holding the pistol will give you the maximum amount of leverage needed to reduce the sway of the weapon in your hand during recoil.

Place your non-dominant hand on the other side of the handle. It will support the other hand, and be an additional lever when shooting.

    • Place your hand as high as possible on the handle.
    • All four fingers should be under the trigger guard, and the index finger should rest firmly on the bottom of the trigger guard.
    • The thumb should point forward and be in contact with the other thumb.

    Handgun stance

Get into position when shooting. Stand up straight with your feet firmly on the ground and point the gun at the target. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent.

    • This position will allow you to move easily while giving your body stability.
    • Raise the gun in front of you. Your arms should be extended forward and slightly bent at the elbows. The gun should not be next to your face.
    • Tilt your body forward a little, imagine that you are “drilling” the wall with a drill. So you can keep your balance, despite the recoil when shooting.

    Shooting aiming technique

Take aim. Follow the instructions below to correctly aim at the target.

    • In most people, the dominant eye is on the same side as the dominant hand, but there are exceptions.
    • To determine which eye is your dominant, put your thumb and forefinger together in a ring. Then stretch out your hand and look through the ring at some distant object.
    • Start gradually bringing the ring closer to your face, keeping both eyes open, but don't look at it. As a result, you will bring your hand to your dominant eye.

When aiming, the front sight and the rear sight of the pistol must be in line. The pistol has a rear sight and a front sight. When you aim, the front sight should be exactly centered between the two edges of the rear sight slot.

    • The front sight consists of one part, and the rear sight of two parts with a slot.
    • There should be the same distance between the front sight and the edges of the rear sight slot.
    • The top of the front sight should also be flush with the edges of the rear sight.

Take aim. When you aim a pistol, you will need to look at the rear sight, the front sight, and the target. Of course, it is physically impossible to look at all three objects at once. Therefore, try to focus mainly on the front sight and rear sight. In this case, it is recommended to focus on the front sight (closer to the muzzle of the pistol).

    • The target should look a little blurry. You should be able to see it, but it should be in the background and less clear than front sight and rear sight.
    • More specifically, you must concentrate on the fly. It will help you determine the relative position of the gun to your target.

Choose a spot on the target. The target has three places to aim at. No location is preferable to another, so you will have to determine for yourself which one will be the most convenient for aiming.

    • You can aim directly at the center of the target. To do this, you need to aim the top of the fly at the center accordingly. The line of the top of the front sight must also coincide with the horizontal line of the center of the target.
    • You can aim directly at the bullseye (this method of aiming is called 6:00 o'clock). When actually shooting, aim so that the top of the front sight is slightly past the bottom of the black bull's-eye.
    • Or you can aim just below the bullseye (sub 6 aim). When actually shooting, the front sight should be aimed at approximately the middle of the white part of the target area below the bull's-eye.

Concentrate. You will need patience and concentration. If you aim carelessly, you will surely miss.

    • Before shooting, make sure the front sight is properly seated in the rear sight slot.
    • Don't rush and be calm. If you freak out and start trying to pull the trigger too hard, you could lose your target and miss.

Pull the trigger and fire. Do it confidently, evenly, and do not overtighten.

    • Pull the trigger evenly. Push only the front of the trigger.
    • Pull the trigger first until you feel resistance.
    • Then keep pulling the trigger until you have fired. Try not to expect it, as this often leads to a miss.

    Shooting safety

    • Be sure to keep your index finger on the brace before you shoot.
    • Point the gun in a safe direction. You must always point the gun away from people so as not to injure anyone or damage other people's property. If you are in a shooting range, then hold the gun pointing it downwards.
    • Consider your gun loaded, even if it isn't. This is necessary to prevent a possible tragedy.
    • You must clearly see where your target is, as well as all the space around and beyond it. It is important to make sure that all precautions are taken and that no one is thrown into the lines of fire. The target must be positioned so as not to pose a danger to anyone or anything near it. If you are going to shoot on private property, then make sure there are no houses or businesses nearby.

According to the rules and regulations International Confederation of Practical Shooting (IPSC), or in English the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSS), since its inception, THREE “golden” basic rules for shooting safety, also called the CODE ARROW, have been established:

    1. My weapon is always loaded!

In any situation, in any case and with any weapon, we handle as with charged(remember how much you heard about a gun that hung on the wall for several years, and then suddenly went off?)

    2. I will point the gun only where I am going to shoot!

    Common mistakes when aiming

Mistakes happen when aiming incorrectly. They occur if the front sight is not correctly installed in the rear sight slot. How correctly you aim can be determined by bullet hits on the target.

    • If the bullet lay below the center of the target, then when aiming, the upper part of the front sight was below the upper edges of the rear sight slot.
    • If the bullet hit above the center of the target, then the top of the front sight was above the top edges of the rear sight slot.
    • If the bullet lay to the right of the center, then the front sight was closer to the right side of the rear sight slot.
    • If the bullet lay to the left of the center of the target, then the front sight was located closer to the left side of the rear sight slot.

Parallel offset. This error occurs when the front sight and rear sight are set correctly, but your hand is thrown up on recoil.

    • It will all depend on whether the recoil points your hand up or down. Accordingly, try to aim slightly above the center of the target or slightly below.

Mistakes in holding a pistol. Parallel offset is not the only error that can occur when shooting. Bullet holes in the target can also indicate other errors.

    • If the bullet hits the target closer to your dominant side, then you are most likely gripping the gun too hard with your thumb or pulling the trigger too hard. Accordingly, if the bullet lay in the opposite direction from the center of the target, then you are pushing the trigger too weakly.
    • If you're right-handed and the bullet hit the bottom right corner (or vice versa if you're left-handed), then you're probably holding your gun too tight when pulling the trigger. If you hit the lower left corner, then you are most likely pulling the trigger a lot.
    • If you are right handed and the bullet hits the upper right corner (or vice versa if you are left handed), then you expect recoil when fired. If the bullet hits the upper left corner, then you are also expecting recoil or not “following the shot”.

Now you know (in theory) how to properly stand on your feet, hold a gun and aim it at a target. It remains only to consolidate this knowledge with practice. Therefore, feel free to hit the shooting range!

And remember that THE MOST IMPORTANT IS SAFETY!
