The results of the women's free program at the World Championships were shocking - and this is not an exaggeration. Fans of the national teams of Russia and Italy are horrified - Carolina Kostner and Alina Zagitova could not stand the fight for gold and withdrew themselves, making mistakes. As a reminder, the tournament takes place from March 21 to March 25, 2018 in the city of Milan.

From the density of spectators in the stands of the arena in Milan, it was clear what all figure skating fans in the world were expecting. As we approached the climax of the performance of the girls, the stands gradually filled up, and by the last warm-up there were no empty seats in the hall. The last warm-up, of course, included the performance of more than two skaters. However, neither Miyahara nor Sotskova managed to create a miracle on the ice. Sotskova's mistake completely threw her out of the podium, and therefore, before the two final skates, Canadian Caitlin Osmond remained in first place, already trying on bronze.

And then Alina Zagitova came out on the ice. Everyone knows very well that the most difficult free free 15-year-old Olympic champion is her trump card. Therefore, Alina's minimal lag behind Carolina Costner did not bother anyone - most experts considered the Russian figure skater the main contender for gold. However, what happened next was shocking.

Alina could not stand the pressure. Three falls. Complete failure. Nightmare.

Athletes from Russia won a silver medal at the World Figure Skating Championships on March 22, 2018. Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov became the second in the free program among sports couples. The duo managed to score 225.53 points in all competitions. The second pair Natalia Zabiyako and Alexander Enbert took the 4th position, they managed to score - 207.88.

In the short ice dance, the Russian athletes performed slightly worse. The duet of Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin took the 7th position, and the couple Tiffany Zagorski and Jonathan Gureiro became the 8th. However, this is only their first performance, the decisive will be an arbitrary performance in ice dancing, where the duets must show themselves in full glory.

If we evaluate the world championship on the basis of maintaining quotas for the next season, and this is exactly the task called by the president of the FFKKR, then it can be considered successful. In pairs and women, we have three vacancies each, the dancers have two, and the guys were able to win three at all. However, the overall impression of the championship still remains painful - primarily because of an unsuccessful performance. The fall of the Olympic champion in a free program, in which she frantically tried to catch up with the music, was comparable to a horror movie.

If Alina had saved at least one of the three jumps from falling, then she would have stood on the podium with a silver medal - everything would have been psychologically easier. How could this have happened? There are a complex of reasons: the physical growth of the athlete, fatigue from the Olympic season and the training schedule that has gone awry after returning from Pyeongchang. The absence, which would have shared the burden of responsibility with Alina and withdrew some of the attention, also played a role. It can be argued that in December last year, Zagitova won the Grand Prix final even without Medvedeva. But then only the first half of the season was still going on, Alina was not yet the champion of the country, Europe and the Olympic Games and did not manage to go through a face-to-face confrontation with Evgenia twice. By the way, the December performance was also not perfect.

    INITIAL RISK PROGRAM

For all the outstanding results of the three adult seasons, Medvedeva also did not do without falls, but this never led her to failure. And it's not just about more experience and a more stable nervous system. None of Medvedeva's six competitive programs during her adult career was staged at such a crazy pace as Zagitova's "Don Quixote". In the event of a fall, Evgenia had time to get up, come to her senses and continue to skate, and not chase after music. Alina's free program initially did not leave the right to fall, and was skated to such an extent that she did not even think about it. When the fall in Milan happened from the first stage, it was already impossible to stop this chain.

It is possible that at some point Alina had a psychological barrier: after all, the starting branded cascade of triple Lutz and Rittberger did not work out right away in Pyeongchang and at the Moscow Champions Show, and at the World Championships, Lutz ended in a fall. Fortunately, the season is over, the Olympic champion will be able to recharge the batteries and decide how she will continue her journey. Was there an opportunity to leave Alina to rest at home, and send another skater to Milan to maintain quotas? Taking into account the removal of Medvedeva and the inclusion of Stanislava Konstantinova in the national team instead of her, who eventually took 19th place, instead of Alina, theoretically, they could have played or. But hardly any of the girls could show the result above the 8th position.

    JOY AND BRONZE KOLYADA

Joy came to us from where they did not expect - from the side of men's single skating. and, third and seventh places respectively, many years later returned three men's vacancies for the next season. And Kolyada inscribed himself in the history of our male "single": the first medal since 2011 and the second since 2004. If we talk specifically about the quality of skiing, then in comparison with the European Championship, our guys seemed to have changed places: Dmitry took risks in both programs, and Mikhail in the short one decided to return to the reliable version with one quadruple sheepskin coat. What the famous coach called "girl skating and 20-year-old content" brought Kolyada 100.08 points in the short program and allowed him to become the second according to its results, lagging behind the leader by less than 2 points. In the free program, it was not possible to repeat the same brilliant performance - again three quadruples (lutz and two sheepskin coats), from which Mikhail could only leave the sheepskin coat, and even then with difficulty.

In the free program, Chen saved the impression from the warm-up performance of the strongest. In it, he fell three times, the same number of times, trying to perform six quadruple jumps, and the two-time bronze medalist of the World Championships, a Chinese man, collapsed five times. Against this background, Kolyada, with his two falls, looked like a model of composure. As for Aliyev, who has become, the assessment of his performance depends on the approach. If evaluated locally, he should be offended because of an error in the short program, which was worth 10 points. With them, Dmitry would confidently occupy the fourth line, and maybe even higher. But globally, Aliyev was at his best - he twice landed a quadruple lutz, and only he and Chen succeeded in the free program.

    OPTIMISTIC DYNAMICS

The second place, as well as the fourth, together with the seventh place, look optimistic. Although the last two duets could have taken places higher, but in the short program the judges held their marks, and in the free program our couples could not do without mistakes. For Evgenia from Vladimir, this championship was an opportunity to rehabilitate himself for an offensive fourth place in the personal tournament of Pyeongchang. But the chance to win the championship also depended on Olympic champions... The German couple did not provide it with a brilliant rental of an arbitrary program for the world record. But the dynamics of the performances of our couple at the world championships is very pleasant: debut 6th place, then 5th, last year's bronze against the background of injury, silver at the end of a difficult Olympic season, next year gold is asking for.

    UNFURRENED HOPES

When they announced their non-participation in the World Championship, there was still hope for the return of three quotas in dancing. There was a feeling that, already in the status of the first pair of the country, I could compete for getting into the top five. For this, more than three points were not enough, lost on the lost difficulty levels and the penalty point in the short dance. As a result, in the absence of two world leaders, they managed to take only seventh place.

But our other duo can take the debut eighth place to their asset, because, according to a technical assessment, in a free dance they were able to bypass not only their teammates, but the Americans who became fifth. There is also a sad circumstance for us: this season the silver medalists of the championship, the Americans, have won the right to be in the group of the strongest couples. This means that even a possible departure will not free up higher places for our dancers. Taking into account that Bobrova / Soloviev will miss the next season, a battle is expected not only for the status of the first pair of the country, but also with foreign pairs, who will also want to take advantage of the leaders' departure.

The World Figure Skating Championships ended on Saturday in Milan, Italy with a dance tournament won for the third time in their career by France's Gabriela Papadakis / Guillaume Sizeron. Russia remained in this type of program without awards, but the overall result of the national team's performances should be considered worthy. The Russians have two medals: Evgenia Tarasova / Vladimir Morozov won the first silver in their career in pair skating, Mikhail Kolyada received a bronze medal in men's singles.

World Cup 2018 in figure skating. Milan, Italy). The composition of the Russian national team:

In three types of program Russian skaters ensured the maximum number of quotas at the next world championship (three each), in dancing, like a year ago, won two vacancies.

    The last is remembered

Papadakis and Sizeron updated all three world records in Milan, which was another achievement for the duo, in addition to medals: despite the fact that the French collected all the top titles for three years (the only exception was the Olympic Games), the record result in a short dance never did not belong to them before. Now the dance records look like this: 83.73 points in the short dance, 123.47 in the free dance and 207.20 in the offset of the two programs.

The free dance of the French, of course, has graced the current world championship - the performance of so many leaders in the other three disciplines turned out to be a frank failure in Milan.

The dance tournament was a benefit for Canadian coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon and Frenchman Romain Hagenauer: second place was also won by their wards Madison Hubbell / Zachary Donoghue, who had never climbed the podium in major tournaments (the duo was ninth at last year's World Championships). The dancers became the US champions for the first time this season, and in Milan they beat Canadians Caitlin Weaver / Andrew Poje, who became bronze medalists.

Russian athletes Alexandra Stepanova / Ivan Bukin and Tiffany Zagorski / Jonathan Gureiro are in seventh and eighth positions. Both duos exceeded their personal records in free dance, and the second of the couples added four points to the best personal result at once.

    Bronze with low blood

18-year-old American Nathan Chen became the world champion in men's single skating on Saturday. Having shown the best result of the season in the world in the free skate, he beat Olympic vice-champion Shomu Uno by 47.63 points.

The holiday also took place on a Russian street: Mikhail Kolyada became the third, Dmitry Aliev - the seventh, and with these results the skaters provided Russia with the maximum number of quotas at the next world championship, which was a big surprise: Russian singles did not have to perform at the world championships with their full complement for many years ...

"I am dissatisfied with the rental of the (free program), mistakes were made, but according to the second assessment, according to the presentation, I liked everything. There are, of course, questions about the technical part. But the season is over. I think that I performed quite well here at the World Championships," he said. Kolyada to the press service of the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR).

“Even before the World Championships, my coach and I decided that we would skate such programs, a light version of the short one,” the athlete added. “After the Games, only three weeks have passed, and not everyone has time to recover in such a short period of time. The season was quite long, tense, but it felt pretty easy today for me. After the short program, I tried not to think about places and medals. Thinking about it, you can go crazy. "

Chen repeated his Olympic achievement by performing six jumps in four revolutions in the free program, and set new record season for free rental and for the sum of two programs (219.46 and 321.40).

Second Russian participant Dmitry Aliev became the seventh, having completed three quadruple jumps in the free program.

"These are my first three quads in an arbitrary program that I managed to do," the skater told the FFKKR press service. But I could jump. This is my first season at an adult level. I myself understand that I can work and compete with the guys who are on the podium. For me, these points that I got today are not what I'm going for . I want to get more, go higher, for that I need to work harder and skate cleaner. "

    Shock therapy

The final of women's single skating, which was supposed to be a triumphant one for Russia, turned out to be the most painful. Canadian Caitlin Osmond became the world champion for the first time, but the Olympic champion Alina Zagitova and the five-time European champion Carolina Costner, who, according to all forecasts, were to compete for gold and silver of the world championship, remained fifth and fourth.

With the exception of the cascade "double axel - triple sheepskin coat", performed with a small mistake on landing from the second jump, all other elements of the free program were performed by the Canadian for pluses, she scored a fairly high amount of points for two runs (223.23), but it is worth admitting that the skater would hardly have been able to compete with Zagitova if the latter had not had a force majeure in the form of three falls.

Olympic champion Oleg Vasiliev told RIA Novosti that he was not surprised by Zagitova's defeat.

“The problem is, first of all, that after the Olympic Games, Alina's training regimen was very lost. which was for many months, when an athlete jumped one hundred, two hundred jumps every day, it is enough to skip training several times to get out of this standard, "the specialist said.

"When you have a huge continuous work behind you, it creates inertia, which kind of pushes you forward when you go out to compete. Zagitova's victory on Olympic Games- this is just the result of the hard brutal work that she did. And then there was a pause, and there was less work. In this case, you have to concentrate more. It is a very difficult thing to get ready for the maximum result when there is no tenfold reserve, "the expert explained.

According to Vasiliev, at a certain moment the Olympic champion "panicked." "Zagitova fell on the first jump, and since the jumps in the free program are going one by one at a very high pace, there was no time to figure out what to do. Panic set in. That's all that happened," he concluded.

Elena Buyanova's ward, Maria Sotskova, became the eighth, having performed a free program with a fall on a triple lutz, and the third Russian participant Stanislav Konstantinova, who made her debut in adult competitions this season, took only 19th place, calling the experience terrible.

    Sixfold Alena

The most striking performance of the championship was the free program of Olympic champions Alena Savchenko / Bruno Massot in pair skating. The 34-year-old has added the sixth highest world title to her collection, and her partner has become a world champion for the first time. Skaters completed free skating with a world record and won against reigning champions Europe Evgenia Tarasova / Vladimir Morozov about twenty points.

The results of the women's free program at the World Championships were shocking - and this is not an exaggeration. Fans of the national teams of Russia and Italy are horrified - Carolina Kostner and Alina Zagitova could not stand the fight for gold and withdrew themselves, making mistakes. 17:20 - ice dancing, free program

    16:30 - demonstration performances

The skates are put in their covers, the suits are in the travel bags. Skaters from all over the world leave Milan in different moods. For some, the world championship turned out to be excellent, for others it was a failure. Russian fans also have mixed feelings. Kolyada was technically weaker than his rivals, but received a medal, Zagitova was stronger, but failed. Tarasova and Morozov were good, but there was an abyss to gold, and between the dancing couples from Russia and the pedestal there was a brick wall. "Championship" together with the Olympic medalist and famous choreographer Ilya Averbukh understood the results of the tournament and looked into the future with optimism.

    - Ilya, what was the main, in your opinion, event of the World Championship in Milan?
    - For the first time in many years we have a prize in men's single skating. Misha Kolyada performed great, and Dima Aliev took a big step forward. In this regard, Russia can send three athletes to the next tournament. This is a very serious achievement, since we have not had such a quota for a long time. This will definitely whip up all the Russian guys, give them more motivation, since their chances to go to the European and World Championships have increased.

    - I suppose, very close in importance and the second place in pair skating?
    - Of course! I'd like to praise our best couple, Evgeny Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov. They performed in Milan at their own strength. The German duo Savchenko and Masso are now objectively stronger, and our guys have bypassed all other rivals. Yes, there was no Chinese couple who won silver at the Olympics, but the competition was still huge. And the second place in the World Championship is a big reserve for the next four years. It was clear that after the Olympics, the guys showed hard skating. This season was in many ways a step forward for them, and I think next year we will see this couple seriously matured.

After the Olympics, Tarasova and Morozov showed hard skating. This season was in many ways a step forward for them, and I think next year we will see this couple seriously matured.

    - What happened at the World Championships with Alina Zagitova?
    - Much has been said about her relative failure. I emphasize - relative, since the main start of the season was the Olympics, and Alina became the champion there. And this season she won the Grand Prix finals and the European Championship. What happened to her at the World Championships? This is a sport: psychology, physical fatigue, and changes in anthropometric data - all together affected. It hardly makes sense now to discuss all this in detail again. But this is not a tragedy, definitely. The most important thing in the current situation is how we will see Alina at the beginning of the next season, because she has a difficult moment, a transitional period. Even if she won the world championship, the victory would not insure her against these difficulties. Maybe defeat will even serve as a cold shower and motivation for the next season, it will show that you should not rest on your laurels and you need to prepare for the next starts.

There are no invincible Russians. Why Zagitova failed the World Cup

Alina Zagitova fell, got up and fell again. She no longer had the strength.

    - You said about seasoned skating in relation to Tarasova and Morozov, but it seemed that all the participants in the Olympics, except for Zagitova, performed in Milan more mature and confident.
    - This is true. The Olympics gave the guys a lot in terms of experience. Alina, perhaps, just lacked such experience - she seemed to panic after the first unsuccessful jump. But Tarasova and Morozov, the guys, felt this experience. The Olympics gave them a lot in terms of confidence, understanding themselves on the ice. And now we have a very good, young team. We have not lost our positions and can safely look into the next four years.

    - The first numbers of the Russian team were criticized for the weak technical aspects of their programs. First of all, of course, we are talking about Kolyada, but others also got it. Do you think our top skaters have potential for growth in terms of technique?
    - Yes, I see good prospects. We have the strongest women's single skating team with a huge level of competition. We have every chance to fight and win gold in pair skating - Tarasova and Morozov will progress. That is, already in two forms we are close to gold. In men's single skating, we really let our rivals a little, but there is still optimism. It can be seen that both Misha Kolyada and Dima Aliyev perform the quadruple lutz, show the most difficult jumps, but so far they cannot do them with the proper stability. But I think we can well count on the revival of men's singles skating. In dancing, it will be most difficult to break through the wall, but even there everything is not hopeless - there are chances.

Slippery ice. Kolyada fell less often than rivals and earned a medal

Competitors with complex programs fell and fell, and Kolyada with a simpler one performed with dignity and won bronze at the World Championship.

    - By the way, what about dancing at the World Championships? How would you rate the performances of the Russians?
    - I have liked the couple of Stepanova and Bukin for a long time. I believe that they are competitive, if not with the champions from France, then with everyone else - for sure. It seems to me that they are still being held back a little in this American-Canadian sphere, but I think the guys will still have a chance to break through. I can't help but rejoice for the pair of Zagorski and Gureiro: getting into the top ten right off the bat is very good result... If next year the couple of Stepanova and Bukin remain the first number, I believe that they will be able to make a leap forward and begin to return our dances to the leading positions. Moreover, we have another talented couple: Sinitsyna and Katsalapov. The guys have enormous potential, but they have lost a lot this season due to their unsuccessful performance at the Russian championship. Hopefully next year they will catch up.

The most important thing is how we will see Zagitova at the beginning of the next season, because she has a difficult moment, a transitional period. And even if she won the world championship, the victory would not insure her from these difficulties.

    - There is an opinion that the judges at the World Championships in Italy were sometimes too weird. Was there anything out of the ordinary or was it just about the same as usual at such tournaments?
    - Everything was in moderation. Probably, this topic could have been talked about when Carolina Costner took first place after the short program, but then she really skated brilliantly. It was a great performance by an outstanding figure skater at home ice... The judges are real people, they could take this into account and add a little to Caroline. But that's okay - it happens at all tournaments. In general, I would say this: whoever dashed off what, in the end got it.

    - What particular performance at this World Championship did you remember the most?
    - This is definitely Savchenko and Masso. Their free program is a real event! Everything else in this tournament is first and foremost figure skating, and only then something artistic. And this program of the German couple can be called a real art!
