We all remember how in 2013 some of the IOC members tried to exclude wrestling from the Games program. Russia, the leading power in this sport, was able to defend one of its crown sports only at the last moment. It was said then that the desire to get rid of wrestling was due to the need to "move" our country in the medal standings, and wrestling was one of the most medal-intensive sports.

As a result, they could not take it away - they decided to add it. Although at the same time, it was said that the schedule of the Olympic Games is unnecessarily overloaded and, if any of the sports will be added to the program, it will only be due to the exclusion of another.
