• Fisht stadium confederations cup. Confederations Cup

    16.09.2021

    As part of the 2017 Confederations Cup football tournament, the group round qualifiers and the semi-finals will be held at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi.

    Main Olympic stadium

    The stadium is located in the Olympic Park in the city of Sochi. A popular Russian resort on the Black Sea coast in 2014 became the capital of the Winter Olympics. Every year, a stage of the Formula 1 race at the Russian Grand Prix is held here.

    The stadium was built in 2013 as a central Olympic facility. It hosted the opening and closing of the Games, as well as the award ceremony.

    The architectural silhouette of the stadium echoes its name. Mount Fisht (2800 m) is one of the peaks of the Caucasian ridge. The word "fisht" in translation from the local dialect means "gray-headed". The image of the structure resembling a snow-capped peak was taken as a basis.

    The project was developed by the Populous architectural bureau, which has been building significant sports facilities for the past 40 years. The Russian partners of the project are the construction company Ingeokom and KB Mosproekt-4. The Fisht Stadium construction manager is Populous Chief Architect Damon Lavelle.

    During the design and construction of the sports facility, all the necessary points were taken into account, including:

    • ensuring the safety of athletes and spectators;
    • minimal harm to the ecology of the surrounding area;
    • accessibility for disabled fans.

    The cost of building the stadium is officially estimated at 23.5 billion rubles.

    Reconstruction

    The idea of transforming the Olympic facility into a football arena was laid down at the design stage. After the end of the XXII Winter Olympics, its reconstruction began, for which about 3.8 billion rubles were allocated from the budget.

    In order to hold the Confederations Cup at the stadium in Sochi, it was decided to increase its capacity from 40 to 45 thousand seats. For this, the northern and southern stands were additionally built. In addition, during the reconstruction, the temporary roof was dismantled and the entrance pavilions were built.

    Commissioning work was carried out until the first football match, which took place here on March 28, 2017. The friendly match between the teams of Russia and Belgium ended with a score of 3: 3. After the identified shortcomings were eliminated, the Fisht stadium was transferred for use by FIFA.

    In a year, the Fisht sports arena will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In the future, it is planned to hold mass entertainment show programs on it. At the same time, the number of viewers in everyday use will be 25 thousand seats.

    Design features

    Width - 140 m.

    Length - 270 m.

    Height - 70 m.

    Arena - 105x68 m.

    The capacity is 45,000 seats.

    The canopies over the West and East stands are made of an innovative material with excellent strength and corrosion resistance. To create the image of a snowy peak, the architects used a light transparent polycarbonate coating. The end stands offer panoramic views of the Black Sea coast and the mountainous heights of the Caucasus.

    For the convenience of placing fans, the sectors have color separation, stairways and elevators. The original design project of the stadium was conceived in such a way that in summer the roof structure would provide the building with shade. In winter, when the sun is low, the light is refracted so as to penetrate inside and create additional illumination of the arena.
