• Oi handball men. Then and Now: An Exciting History of Handball as Part of the Olympics

    16.09.2021

The second Olympics in a row at the finish line gives Russian fans a fantastic victory in a team sport in terms of drama and emotion. In London, the heroes were male volleyball players who pulled out an almost hopeless final from the Brazilians. We now give a standing ovation to our women's handball team, which has performed a real miracle in Rio.

It is impossible not to fall in love with this team, and I would not be surprised if, after the summer holidays, crowds of girls and boys line up in the handball sections. This contrast is especially strong against the background of football players who limply and senselessly traveled to France this summer. Perhaps, for the first time at this Olympics, I saw how Brazilians openly and consciously support Russia. No, in principle, the hosts of the Games treat us quite normally - when they meet, they smile, shout "Yuri Gagarin" and are generally very nice. But for some reason they are usually ill against, or simply do not express their emotions in any way. But in women's handball, everything was different. And when in the final game impressive groups of the French sang their signature Allez les bleus, the locals answered them with cheerful "Rusia". And they were completely sincerely happy when our girls won their main match in life. Probably, they just felt that the Russians were beating with their hearts, and not just with their bodies.

Before each meeting of the Olympic tournament at the "Future Arena" where handball players competed, the anthems of the participating countries were played. Russian girls always sang it so that it could be heard in the stands. And when journalists tortured them in the mixed zone, what is the difference between matches for the club and the national team, they always answered simply: "Here we are not playing for money, but for our country, for Russia."

To understand the scale of what this team has done, you just need to rewind a little back four years. London Olympics, quarterfinals. The Russian national team, at that time a four-time world champion, is sensationally losing to South Korea. Evgeny Trefilov resigns and soon gets a microinfarction - obviously, such stories leave wide scars on the heart. And the handball players, without their charismatic coach, who gave this team 12 years of life, instantly roll downhill. And they are not selected for the 2013 World Cup. That is, they do not go to the tournament at all, which they won just four years ago. The bottom turned out to be much closer than we could imagine. And the ascent with the operative returning Trefilov took a lot of time. 14th place at the 2014 European Championships, then getting into the top five at the World Championships, and obtaining an Olympic license through qualification.

Let's be honest, such a track record is not exactly the one that you would expect from the national team to win the Olympics. Especially when you consider that in the entire history of such victories there were no such victories at all, and the only success was the “silver” at the Games in Beijing, with the final completely lost to the Norwegians. What Trefilov did with the girls to make them so wonderfully transformed in Rio, we will probably figure it out for a long time. But already at the group stage, this team showed a fantastic character. She pulled out a crazy match against the Koreans, where she lost seven goals and won five, taking revenge for London. Saved a seemingly hopeless game against Sweden, where the gap reached six goals. To top it off, she lost the main goalkeeper Anna Sedoykina, who was replaced by Tatyana Erokhina, who urgently rushed to Rio during the tournament.

And then there's Norway in the semifinals. The main and undisputed favorite, the winner of the last two Olympiads, reigning champion world, and just a team that easily "brought" opponents 10-12 balls. When the girls, having beaten Angola in the quarterfinals, said with blue eyes that they had surprises for Norway, and they knew how to beat her, it was still hard to believe. But they were right. Validol, dramatic insane match ended in overtime with Ekaterina Ilyina's precise seven-meter throw - 38:37, and Russia in the final. Where she has dealt with France for the second time in the tournament. Without even giving in to doubt their strength - throughout almost the entire final, the Russians were in the lead, and naturally won 22:19. Believe it or not, the team that won nothing for seven years ended up on the gold podium in the Olympic Games.

And then there were pure emotions and simple human happiness. “We are the champions,” the girls shouted, running into the locker room. Where there were dances and hugs with Evgeny Trefilov. Then the awards ceremony, at which many already could not hold back their tears - neither on the podium, nor in the hall. And once again it became a little sad because of the strict Olympic rule, according to which only athletes and not coaches receive medals. Already on someone, but on Evgeny Trefilov, who all his life and 32-year coaching career went to this success, “gold” Rio would look as organic as possible.

At the same time, Evgeny Vasilyevich himself was unusually quiet. Journalists are used to the fact that each of his post-match performances guarantees an extravaganza. Trefilov's phrases instantly diverge into quotations, which should be published as a separate book. But this time Evgeny Vasilyevich did without the “pearls”. I was very tired - both mentally and physically. “Guys, I'll go. Let go,” he pleaded as he left after the press conference. And he went. "The Handball Man", as fans sometimes call him half-jokingly, brought women's handball to its highest point. He earned the right to rest.

Well, the correspondent of "RG" went with questions to our goalkeeper Tatyana Erokhina. She had to join the tournament on the fly, and Tatyana did it brilliantly. For example, in the final, she reflected 11 shots of the French women out of 28 - an amazing statistic. Especially considering the status of the match and the level of the opponent.

Tatyana, what does a person feel with an Olympic gold medal on his neck?

Tatiana Erokhina: To be honest, I haven't realized yet. Happiness overwhelms, but realization will come later a little.

If someone told you before the start of the Olympics that you would pass the tournament without defeat, would you believe it?

Tatiana Erokhina: Honestly? Of course not. I couldn't believe it.

What was the most difficult moment for you?

Tatiana Erokhina: When Anya Sedoykina was injured, and I came as a substitute, and I had to immediately join the game.

And what emotions did the semi-final with Norway leave?

Tatiana Erokhina: We were happy. They cried and did not even believe that they had done it. But everything worked out for us.

Was it difficult after this to tune in to the final?

Tatiana Erokhina: It was difficult, but we decided that there was only one step left. And we had to overcome this, win the final match and get our well-deserved gold medals. And today we had the confidence that we must put the squeeze on and win.

What is the role of Evgeny Trefilov in this victory?

Tatiana Erokhina: A huge role. If not for him, we would not be here.

Another heroine decisive matches- Ekaterina Ilyina. Which, of course, had to talk about the winning shot against the Norwegian national team.

After the hardest semi-final with Norway, was it not hard to get ready for the game with France?

Ekaterina Ilyina: Well, it was the final match. And we knew we had no right to lose it. We tuned in, prepared, took our rival very seriously, worried. You know, the French women were glad that they came out in the final against us, and not against the Norwegians. Evgeny Vasilyevich told us about this, and it made us even more angry. We came here to win, won, and I am very, very happy.

Why did you hide your talent as a penalty taker for so long and revealed it at the end of the semifinals with Norway?

Ekaterina Ilyina:(Laughs) Everything has its time.

How difficult is it to reach the seven-meter mark when the fate of the team depends on your shot?

Ekaterina Ilyina: Yes, it was a very exciting moment. But I tried not to let fear, not to be afraid. And I didn't think about it.

What was the order of execution of the seven-meter marks? Before you, three of our girls missed.

Ekaterina Ilyina: Yes, they just said: "Who will go?" And everyone started talking: "Katya, go." And Evgeny Vasilyevich said: "Well, Katyukha, come on." Well, I went (laughs).

Was it easier in the final?

Ekaterina Ilyina: I do not think. Each game was tough in its own way. And I will not say that it was easy for us. This is the final match after all. It's just that with the French women, we believed in our strength, in the fact that we could win. And emotionally, they were probably better prepared.

Even when the French equalized in the middle of the second half, were there any doubts?

Ekaterina Ilyina: No. Yes, somewhere in the depths of your soul you think: "God, they are already catching up." But we still had the strength to fight to the end.

    Number

Our handball team won eight matches in a row at the Rio Olympics to receive gold medals

Late 19th century in Denmark the sport was invented - handball.

Holger Nielsen in 1898 proposed a new ball game as a good alternative to football.

The main difference is that in handball you need to play with your hands, and the number of players is equal to seven.

    Recognition as an international sport

In 1926"Handball" has been officially recognized as an international sport. This event had a key impact on the development of sports discipline.

Many clubs began to be created that developed handball in their countries, stood out Spanish, Swiss and Luxembourgish clubs.

The next significant event happened two years later (1928), when the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAGF) was created, which operated before 1944 The organization was based in Amsterdam.

A new round in the development of handball was the creation new international federation what happened in 1946. She put forward her program, the goal of which was to revive the world of handball. The main change is the reworking of the format of the matches.

    Handball at the Olympic Games

For the first time the game was included in the program of the Olympic Games in 1936 in Berlin. Initially, only men took part in the competition, women's teams joined the fight since 1976.

In all games, the number of players was equal seven, with the exception of 1936 Olympics, in which each team played 11 people like in football.

The format of the handball tournament at this Olympiad, it should be noted, was very different from the modern one, not only in the number of players, the system was circular, which means the distribution of prizes by the games of each team against the other.

Winner of the competition became the team with the most points. She became Germany national team, the hostess of the Olympics, and second place took the national team Austria.

Attention! After the Berlin Olympics, handball appeared in front of fans only in 1972.

What's interesting, the Olympics held again in Germany but this time in Munich... Since then, handball has not disappeared from the Olympics, and the format of the tournament has become similar to the current one.

As mentioned above, female handball appeared at the Olympics only in 1976 and was held similarly to the men's competition 1936 g., that is, in a circular system.

We moved away from her only after 1988 - in Seoul, the winner of which was the South Korean national team.

Participating in the tournament 12 teams from different countries that share into two groups: A and B. Four best teams from each group go to the play-off series, where there is a fight for victory.

Russian handball players in the final of the Olympiad

In the early twentieth century, handball became a popular sport in many countries, and Russia (then the USSR) was no exception. The Russian Federation has participated in almost every Games, so it can boast of a good arsenal of medals and awards. V medal standings Russia occupies first place and has eleven medals (seven gold, two silver and three bronze).

First awards were conquered USSR national team in 1976, and both the men's and women's teams earned medals (both teams won Olympic gold).

Photo 1. The Russian women's team after defeating the French team in the final of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2017.

Male - broke the resistance of the Romanians with a score of 19:15, while the women defeated the GDR, Hungary and Romania in the final group.

Important! An interesting fact is that the national teams of the USSR and Russia have earned 10 medals, and another one was received by our athletes under the banners of the Joint Team. It included members of the former republics of the USSR.

Olympic champions among men and women

Many countries have always participated in the Olympic Games in handball, however, not all of them left the tournament with medals. The largest number of medals belongs to the national team Russia (including the USSR) - 11 pieces.

Russia 7 times occupied first place, 2 times - second and 3 - third. The second place is taken by the national team South Korea, on her account is 7 medals, of which 2 are gold, 4 are silver and 1 is bronze.

On the third place by the number of prize places is the national team Germany or East Germany which possesses six awards.

At the Olympic Games of the GDR 2 times took the first place, 3 times the second and 1 time the third... And you can also highlight the commands Yugoslavia, Norway, France- each of them owns five medals each. In addition, it is necessary to note the teams Sweden, Spain and Romania, who earned for their countries 4 awards each.

In the 1930s - 1960s, along with handball, in which 7 people can be on the site from each team, handball in the 11 by 11 format was spread. World championships were held in this type of handball (the last men's world championship was held in 1966). But with the inclusion of 7v7 handball in the 1972 Summer Olympics program, the development of 11v11 handball came to naught and is currently not being held.
