Gazeta.Ru continues every month to acquaint readers with the selection of Russian athletes for the main competitions of the next year - summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Last time we said that the team continues to grow and has more than 200 people for a long time.
Another important psychological milestone was taken in March - 250 athletes. All thanks to the success of the women's water polo and handball teams. The girls won tickets in the qualifying tournaments, which were the last chance to travel to Rio.
The two teams add up to an increase of 27 people. But that's not all. In March, the results of qualifications in track cycling and equestrian sports were summed up. Eight Russians will now be able to pedal in Rio - two girls will compete in all sprint disciplines, two men qualified in the individual sprint, one of them will still be lucky to compete in the keirin, and four cyclists will also compete for medals in the men's team pursuit race.
Five Russians will be able to compete in equestrian sports. Two qualified for dressage, and three more will form an eventing team that will perform as in team tournament and personally. For the first time since 1992, Russians were able to qualify for team equestrian competitions.
We add that already now we can congratulate the fencers on the fact that they have won the full quota of 16 people. Officially, the qualification will end on April 4, but no one will knock the Russians out of high positions in the ratings by which the lists of participants are determined.
Let's now calculate how many athletes can perform in Rio under the Russian flag. The greatest representation is possible in swimming - a maximum of 42 different athletes, even taking into account the doping scandal of Yulia Efimova, will try to fish for medals from the Olympic pool and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, where the marathon swim will take place.
Further on the list are rowing (24 people for 4 quotas), volleyball (full quota of 24 people), shooting (20 quotas), fencing (16 people), handball (14 people), water polo (13 people), rowing kayaking and canoeing (13 people for 8 quotas), wrestling (12 quotas), cycling (12 people), gymnastics(full quota of 10 people), weightlifting (full quota of 10 people), diving (10 people), synchronized swimming (full quota of 9 people), boxing (8 quotas), rhythmic gymnastics(full quota of 7 people), sailing (6 people for 4 quotas), rowing slalom (full quota of 5 people), equestrianism (5 people), modern pentathlon (full quota of 4 people), archery (full female quota of 3), taekwondo (3 quotas) and trampoline jumping (full male quota of 2).
Total 272 Russian athlete have already passed the selection for the Olympics. In some sports, quotas are allocated on the basis of ratings, taking into account the performance of athletes in various tournaments. In track cycling and equestrian sports, the results have been summed up, but in a number of disciplines not yet. However, no one will prevent us from assessing the current situation in order to have an idea of what awaits in the future.
In most cases, the situation has not changed over a month. You can still hope for 12 quotas in judo, five in triathlon, three in women's road cycling, one male pair in beach volleyball, one athlete each in BMX and one golf.
Somewhere the situation has changed for the worse. The mixed pair of badminton players and fell sharply in the ranking. Now the way to Rio is closed for them, although there is still time to correct the situation - there will be many tournaments before May 5, where you can score the missing rating points. The other four athletes, nominally qualifying, should also be careful to hold on to their positions in the ratings.
The doping scandal with meldonium could not but affect the Olympic prospects of the Russians. If you can still change it in the pool, then it does not work out yet. In addition to her, only three tennis players and three tennis players are high in the ATP and WTA ratings and have consistently participated in the Federation Cup. She can add to them - she definitely needs to go to court against the Belarusians in the playoffs of the world group.
But there is progress in mountain biking. In the men's rating of countries, Russia has risen to 16th place, which allows us to hope for one ticket. And for women, the alignment is such that they can go to Rio together.
